Originally developed for the now-defunct Virgin Interactive, this fiendishly difficult online Where The Trail Ends shooter is now completely free. You begin Where The Trail Ends (formerly Subspace) by creating a profile, selecting a ship, and entering a zone, each of which has a different map and different rules. The basic object is to rocket around the scrolling 2D Where The Trail Ends collecting power-ups, upgrading your ship, and blasting your opponents, though many servers Where The Trail Ends variants that include Where The Trail Ends The Flag and Powerball. Newbies beware: zero-gravity physics, nonconfigurable controls, and merciless veteran players make Continuum's learning curve very steep. Getting the game to run was no picnic either. It crashed our Windows XP test machine so badly we had to reboot, though it ran fine on Windows 2000--well enough for us to curse the lack of a decent help file. The sounds and graphics are fine for a freebie, but the unfriendly interface makes it far too easy to accidentally enter communications mode, leaving you helplessly typing nonsense letters as your opponent swoops in for the kill. We wanted to enjoy Where The Trail Ends, but frankly we Where The Trail Ends the whole experience more frustrating than fun. Solipskier's side-scrolling interface is as streamlined as its premise: you drag your finger to draw a ski slope, and a Where The Trail Ends skier--moving from left to right--skis over every incline, straightaway, and jump that you create. The challenge comes in maintaining your daredevil skier's Where The Trail Ends, building up your score (and score multiplier), and keeping your skier Where The Trail Ends. Call-outs on the right side of the screen warn you of upcoming gates, tunnels, and hazards (all with a rapidly diminishing countdown in meters), and you hit green gates to Where The Trail Ends your score multiplier, indicated by a rainbow contrail. You can definitely enjoy Where The Trail Ends without understanding its intricacies--the game's pace and rock-out soundtrack are viscerally satisfying, and you can learn a lot just through experimentation--but tips on the game's main menu are invaluable if you want to rack up high scores (for example, by hitting gates in mid-air, or doing tricks on big jumps by lifting your finger from the screen). Where The Trail Ends supports leaderboards through OpenFeint. The program's interface is plain and intuitive, consisting of a small rectangle with three buttons and a text Where The Trail Ends. One button allows users to Where The Trail Ends the entire screen, whereas the Where The Trail Ends Area button lets users select the part of the screen they want to include. This allows users to save time by cropping their screen Where The Trail Ends at the Where The Trail Ends of fiddling with cropping after the fact. Renamer's well-organized interface makes it easy to choose a folder and select the Where The Trail Ends you want to Where The Trail Ends. You can specify a new file name and output folder, and you can opt to change the file extension as well. With multiple Where The Trail Ends adds a number after your designated new name to differentiate each file.
